Jiahao Kang was born in Suihua, Heilongjiang Province, China. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Microelectronics from the Department of Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2010, and Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2013. He had been a Ph. D. Candidate in the Department of ECE, UCSB and a Graduate Student Researcher in Nanoelectronics Research Lab (NRL) under the supervision of Prof. Kaustav Banerjee and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UCSB in 2017.

His Ph.D. research was focused on two-dimensional (2D) electronic materials, starting from in-depth understanding of the physics of various metal contacts, dopants and dielectric interfaces involving 2D materials, to device design for obtaining optimal performances and finally to experimental demonstration of highly efficient electronic devices on 2D materials, as well as other unique applications enabled by these materials.

His research is chronicled in more than 50 papers in leading international conferences and journals including IEEE IEDM, Nature, Nature Electronics, Nature Materials, Nature NanotechnologyNano letters, ACS nano, Scientific ReportsPhysics Review X and Applied Physics Letters. The total citation number is above 1,700 as of 2017, with an h-index of 17. Dr. Kang has also been invited to serve as referee to review and judge work of other researchers for journals like Nanotechnology, 2D Materials, Small, Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, Applied Physics Letters and Chemistry of Materials.

He was awarded a number of prizes for outstanding research performance including IEEE EDS PhD Student Fellowship and Peter J. Frenkel Foundation Fellowship
